The short version: StorySpells is built by a parent, for families. We collect the little we need to make personalized stories, we never sell your information, and we never show ads to your child.
Who we are
StorySpells is a personalized reading web app for children ages 3 to 8, operated from New Jersey, United States. You can reach us any time at hello@mystoryspells.com.
Information we collect
Child profile details. To create personalized stories, we collect the child's first name, age, and their favorites such as a favorite animal, hobby, and a dream destination. We do not ask for last names, addresses, photographs, or birth dates.
Parent account details. If you create an account, we collect the parent or guardian's name, email address, and a securely stored password. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are never stored in readable form.
Reading activity. We store stories your child has created, progress such as stars, streaks and quiz results, and settings such as reading level. This is what lets progress follow your child across devices.
Optional email signup. If you join the beta list, we store the email address and first name you provide.
How we use it
- To generate stories, lessons, and quizzes personalized to your child
- To save progress and let your child pick up where they left off
- To keep the service secure and working properly
- To send you occasional updates if you asked for them, with an unsubscribe link in every message
Children's privacy and parental consent
StorySpells is designed to be used by children with the involvement of a parent or legal guardian. Accounts are created and controlled by adults. By creating an account, you confirm you are the parent or legal guardian of the child using the service and consent to the collection described here.
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children without parental involvement, we do not require a child to disclose more information than is reasonably necessary to use the service, and we do not use children's information for advertising or profiling.
What we never do
- We never sell or rent your information to anyone
- We never show advertising to your child
- We never share your child's stories publicly
- We never use your child's information to build advertising profiles
Service providers
We use a small number of trusted providers to run StorySpells: a hosting provider, a database and authentication provider, and a text generation provider used to create story content. These providers process data only to deliver the service on our behalf. Story requests sent for content generation contain the child's first name and chosen favorites, and are not used to identify your child.
Data stored on your device
Some information, such as progress for visitors who have not created an account, sound and display preferences, and any Calm Stories you create, is stored in your browser on your own device rather than on our servers. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Your choices and rights
You can request a copy of your family's information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and all associated data at any time by emailing hello@mystoryspells.com. We will respond promptly. You may unsubscribe from emails at any time using the link in any message.
Data retention and security
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you ask us to delete it, we remove it from our systems. We use industry standard protections including encrypted connections, secure authentication, and access controls that limit each account to its own data.
Changes to this policy
If we make meaningful changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify account holders by email.
